The Rapuny People's Approach to Travel
In the first 100 years of contact by Europeans, the Rapuny people saw five or six different types of ships. The islanders' contact with outsiders soon takes a darker turn. In December 1862, slave raiders strike from Peru, capturing around 1500 men and women. Within two years, almost the entire population is Roman Catholic. A tuberculosis epidemic leaves fewer than 1,000 native people alive.
