David Perry: Is the idea that Elijah is the herald of the Messiah fundamentally and only from the book of Malachi? Or how does that sort of grow? "Elijah also plays this important role in the Talmud, which is much earlier. And most famously, or at least for me, most famously, Elijah appears in the story of the Avin Avachnai" He says rabbis are using Elijah as kind of a vehicle for claiming that their innovations are actually grounded or somehow okay with God.
