The Gradient: Perspectives on AI

CHAPTER

The Future of AI

We do have AI systems which are perfectly capable of making what looks like reports of consciousness. If you run a language model like GPT-3, it's got very good at imitating human speech. The philosopher Susan Schneider has argued for an artificial consciousness test where we have to ask the machine many probing questions about its own consciousness. But yeah, I'm consciously perceiving colors and space now and I'm having subjective experience. Why does it feel like something to be me? Then I would begin to find that fairly impressive evidence that the AI system was conscious. It wouldn't be proved, but I think it's a fairly impressive evidence.
