The Unaffordability of Housing
The unaffordability of housing appears to not be a mere symptom of inequality, but rather a key driver of it. And banks contribute to that unaffordability by acting as the shadow renters of the entire economy. Here are two graps you might remember from the book review. The first shows that something like forty percent of all gross personal assets in spain represent land. About 25 to 30 % are financial assets that must ultimately cash out to some mixture of real assets, land and capital. So the true percentage due to land is probably higher than 40%.
