Introduction

Last week we left Frederick II of Prussia sitting in judgment over his way with son. The rift was not based on a fundamental personality clash, nor the case of unbridled ambition. Henry believed that all the resources of the family should be employed in rolling back royal power. Forcing the pope into a recognition of the emperor as his equal and as temporal ruler of Christendom was his great objective. And this objective could only be achieved by surrounding the paper lands on all sides.
