Performativity in the Contexts of Gender
Judith butler became famous for the term following the publication of her book, gender trouble. Butler uses perform ativity within the contexts of gender in order to say that gender is not something you are or something you have, but rather something you do. According to this concept, we perform gender largely by observing the behaviors of those around us and repeating those behaviors when attached to particular bodies.
