Readings That Make an Argument

Readings that describe an event or person you should skim. And readings that only provide context you should generally not bother with but take them with you to class in case they're mentioned during class. There is also the sort of sticky issue of fiction. So if you're taking a course like English literature then of course you have to read the fiction because that's the center of the course. But there are certain pieces of fiction that can be so key that they actually should be included as something that's central to the idea.
