People who do have a genuine connection to a particular ethnic group may be incentivized to own that identity, at least for the purposes of ticking the box. This is certainly something that friends and aintances of mine have had. I mean, it could be a very bad thing if it prompts people to adopt a self presentation that they themselves view as false. But on the other hand, when people have been engaged in a struggle and have mobilized around identities that have come under pressure, there's certain entailments.
