When stress is perceived, stress hormones are released into the body. They cause blood vessels in the gut to squeeze shut and push it towards arms and legs. The immune system uses a tremendous amount of energy when running away from an infection or being chased by a sabre-toothed tiger. Stress hormon shuts off the immune system to conserve that energy.
