The six girls involved in the first attack were charged with assault causing bodily harm under the young offenders act. Several of them, including nicol cook, the girl who started the attack by extinguishing a cigarette on rena's forehead, voluntarily outed themselves years later when they participated in documentaries and mediate interviews. The remaining two, kelly ellard and warren gloasky, were charged with second degree murder. Because of the sheer brutality of the crime, crown counsel successfully apply to have them bumped from young offenders to adult court. They were no longer young offenders and their privacy was no longer protected.
