The more I'm involved in this sort of escalating American culture war, the more convinced I am that extremism breeds competing extremes. Americans are moving apart ideologically at a pretty rapid pace and there is an enormous temptation when you are confronted with extremism to respond with an extreme. There's a just because an extremism is seen as a giant threat, a giant threat which requires a giant response. And so I do think that one of the reasons why this is popping up is that extremism creates a temptation in the human heart towards an extreme response even though a more moderate response is just as exclusive of the opposing extremism as the extreme responses.
