The Second Estate

Of the roughly 350 thousand members of the nobility, approximately 50 % were only ennobled in the previous two centuries. The ascension of the plebeians of the rabble was greeted with hostility by many existing blue blooded noble families. This meant that, like the first estate, the second estate was far from homogeneous. Divided along the lines of wealth, genetics or other factors such as religion or ideology, division was rampant within the second estate. But to understand why it was so abhorrent to the masses, we must understand what it was like for the other 99 minus point five% - the third estate.
