The History of the National Parks
On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed into law an act that created the National Park Service. The distinction between a National Park and a National Monument has more to do with how it was established than anything else. Many current National Parks were once National Monuments. Every president since William McKinley has added at least one unit to the park system.
