The Smoking Hills Are the Longest Burning Sites
The smoking hills have probably been burning for hundreds or thousands of years. Archaeology has found 75 sites representing occupations spanning more than three thousand years. Nearly all of these sites are characterized by the predominant use of a tinctive rock called a clinker. It is formed by the spontaneous combustion of local, organic, rich shales.
