Homer is telling his audiences about the far distant past from their standpoint. These songs were delivered orally, they were not read by anybody. Homeric scholar Albert Lord said that traditional oral epic singer is not an artist but a seer. The patterns of thought that he has inherited come into being to serve not art but religion in its most basic sense.
