In the eighteenth century, certainly in britain, there was a extraordinary period of enthusiasm for chinese culture. In many ways, people have argued tachina kind of created parts of european identity. There's not so a many things you can just dismiss of being exotic or unusual or strange but some which are, of course, very alien. The way they reported this encounter did have a big, big impact on the most important economy power in europe as it was going fror industrialization. It started a process of discussion and dialogue, which has had to continue, whether either side like it, till this day.
