The legend hypothesis would explain reports made many years after the relevant time frame. We don't have a lot of detailed documentation that was made during the period itself. It would not surprise me if there is some exaggeration and misremembering going on in the later reports. Some doesn't allow us to dismiss all, but we need to be cally attentive to the broad strokes that appear in multiple later accounts.
