An increase in waist circumference is independently associated with an increase in severity of other symptoms that are contained within this ATP3 criteria for diagnosing metabolic syndrome. The Western diet, which is characterized by over-nutrition, and high amounts of red meat, fat, particularly saturated fat from red meat, and processed carbohydrates is associated with an increased risk. About 96% of the United States adult population consumes more than recommended amount of sodium. High saturated fat tends to be another risk factor when we replace it with mono-unsaturated or polyunsaturated fats.
