The name junia is not roman, but jewish. Paul thought highly enough of her that he commended both of them in romans. Her name was widely accepted as a woman apostle throughout early church history. In later translations, they added an s to it to try to make it a male nameae junius. But what we do know is that the masculine form of the name junia was non existent during those times. And so in two thousand 11, the n i v bible translation went through and made bunch of gender related corrections and changed it back to junia.
