You're Not Willing Your Own Good
In the new catechism, there's both explanations. But traditionally, hope is always about confidence and god and overcoming difficulties. And then in many later theologians, hope is about loving god as your own happiness and desiring happiness. For thomas aquinas and previous writers, even the desire, the love for your own happiness through charity, is part of the love for god. So we could never love some one else's happiness, or will some one else’s happiness more than our own,. because our own happiness is not, sort of, in intent or in competition to the happiness of other people.
