What's Causing the Death of the Puffins?

There's been over a thousand dead puffins washed up along that stretch of Iberia and into the canaries. This is way, way more than any sort of normal level of mortality that we'd expect this time of year. The suggestion seems to be it's been related to severe weather out in the Atlantic and through the Bay of Biscay. If it's prolonged and the strength of it will just mean that the birds really struggle to be able to feed adequately.
