I think the way that you framed it at the time was less a criticism of the idea that we might have something that is kind of like an authentic self brewing around inside of us. Like maybe we've gotten there already. Maybe it still lies in our future. It was less like a criticism of that and more just an idea that people will sometimes use just the idea of a presence of an authentic self to stop them from changing. And it's like, well, guess what? Changes almost always uncomfortable and hard.
