How to Paint a Black and White Photo

I know that with your ink sketches, you always try to imitate some of your, or not imitate, but take some of the things that you love about your favorite anchors and put it into your own work. And then I have an example where I specifically was doing this though. Like there was a painting I was doing of my brother and I when we were kids and I had a black and white photo of us. And I wanted to paint it in color. And I studied Morgan Weisling's color. He really enjoyed his cool lights and warm shadows. How does he make it still feel like real skin when there's such cool colors in the lights? The effect was amazing.
