I was made copy chief and managing editor at a certain point because i was good at being a production editor. That is not the same thing as being a person who runs a department. In fact, it has nothing to do with running a department. And i will confess, and any number of my colleagues will back me up on this, that i did not have natural instincts as a leader of a group. But over time, i think, built a department in which all my many reports are, to a great extent, self determining. Have cultivated marvellous instincts as to what things are theirs to take care of.
