How Do We Convey Texture Through Painting?

Front lighting just in general tends to be less interesting and you rarely see it in paintings. It's that transition from light to shadow that not only helps us convey form three-dimensional form on a two-dimensional canvas but it also helps us convey texture. So we think about edges in painting as being around the contour line of an object but within the object you've got value shapes working together to create that form. That is where we go to get information visually about texture.
