Cognitive architecture is the field of dividing the mind into parts in order to understand what those different parts do. The most basic distinction in any cognitive architecture nowadays, and all them will make it, is between long-term memory and working memory. It's basically the stuff that's in your current awareness and things that you're currently manipulating with thoughts. So if you've got something like a 30-second window for it to disappear, if you don't do anything with it, if you start thinking about something else, then you'll forget about whatever you were thinking about right now.
