Mortals by Norman Rush

There's a first person narrative by an unnamed American anthropology graduate student in Botswana around 1980. This will sound interesting. It focuses on her relationship with Nelson Danoon, a controversial American social scientist who has founded an experimental matriarchal village in the Kalahari Desert. And yes, he is wife, were Peace Corps directors. They happened to meet the director of the Peace Corps in the late 70s. He was always writing stuff, but pretty much unpublished by hero poems and prose. I know I've heard his name before, but never in Canerny's work.
