Introduction

This episode is devoted to philosopher of the Arabs, Al-Kindi. He was a pioneer in his field who drew inspiration from an earlier tradition but expressed that inspiration in a new medium. A devout Muslim, he oversaw the work of a circle of Christian translators. His family background put him in touch with the higher echelons of the Abbasid Society of Ninth Century Iraq.
