Where you grow up be a factor. There was, about ten years ago, this long review looking at all the studies that had looked at national differences and over all levels of optimism. That in cultures that were more individualistic, like australia and canada, here in the united states, the overall levels of optimism were higher than in less individualistic cultures such as hong kong and japan. They also found that there were differences in terms of nations that valued more mastery or control. So again, in countries like the united States, where there's a lot of value placed having control over your circumstances, their optimism levels were higher, too.
