The History of the Ottoman Empire

The Ottoman Empire was fundamentally a frontier state that had expanded into what had been Christian territory. Being Islamic rulers was always a key part of Ottoman identity and became increasingly important as time went on. Between 1481 and 1520, the Ottoman sultans went from being frontier rulers on the fringes of that Islamic world to guardians of its holiest places.
