The Energy Per Gene Idea and the Evolution of Sex
The energy per gene idea was first proposed by Bill Martin 10 years ago. It suggested that the amount of ATP synthesis you could do would depend on the surface area of your cell. And so, if you want to have lots of internal membranes and you really do need genes to control respiration, it's going to depend on the area of the membranes that you would need gene outposts for those genes. That is how bacteria came up with this innovation which distinguished them in a way that no other life has ever experienced.
