The Crusades and the Reformation of the Church
The fifth lateran council wanted to raise money in the 15 tens to help expand and rebuild saint peter's basilica. The church declared that donating to support the building of a new house ofo ip at the vatican would also count as an indulgence. So there is a connection running here, right from the crusades to luther and the birth of protestantism. It has been used as this kind of a political, a magic wand if you were to ask the moslem world in the eighteenth century or the early nineteenth century what they thought about the crusades.
