The Effects of Cognitive Load on Expert Performance
Even if there is no overlap between two skills in expert performance, there might be an overlap at an earlier stage of acquisition. Different training activities work better for different stages of skill acquisition and working memory capacity. Don't judge transfer on one-shot problem-solving tests. Problems often require many pieces of knowledge and procedures to solve correctly. Failure in a tested task could mean a complete failure of transfer. It could also mean that a person is 99% of the way there, but they're just missing that last piece.
