Joan McColl's Life in the Theatre
Theatre is not the great vivid reflection of today that it should be, says Ewan McColl. Joan was born illegitimate to a teenage mum in London and trips to the theatre had helped escape a difficult home life. She won a place at Rada but realised she wanted more than drawing room dramas. Both Joan and Ewan were socialists and their plays were often political with a strong influence from Europe as Peter Rankin remembers.
