Silent Prayer at the End of Vespers
In the Middle Ages, particularly, you didn't have a stopwatch. How you time things is to say a prayer. So recipe books will say throw in a cup of rice and stir for the time of three misgraries. I think that this is a timing of the examination of conscience. And you have that at the end of Vespers as well. You say the Lord's prayer, the Hail Mary, and the Apostles Creed,. Benedict in the rule says there should be some silent prayer at the end Of Vespers. But it should not be too long so that no monk thinks that he should show off by praying longer than. He understood the human nature so well.
