Common places is a rhetorical term that refers to areas of shared meaning, which are widely understood. If you study rhetoric in the ancient up to the medieval world, you'd be expected to have a decent working knowledge of common places. And all of that disappears over the course of modernity, to the point where we are to speak of something being commonplace. It's boring, it has nothing to recommend it, because what we're interested in now is the signal, and not the noise.
