The History of Rabies

Ancient Greeks used this word poetically to describe a primal animalistic rage. The best early medical description of rabies comes from the Shushruta Samhita, which is a Sanskrit text of ancient Indian medicine. To some, rabies was a disorder of the mind; to others, it was a venom similar to that of a snake or a scorpion. And whichever cause your doctor believed in dictated the treatment, which wasn't going to work.
