Religion is so important in american life that you can find its impact in all social movements across the political spectrum. A christian movement called the social gospel, starting in the nineteenth century, helped lead to the progressive era of the early twentieth century. People don't want to give up what they fought to get, and what they feel like their families fought for generations.
