The essential worker is the person who is undocumented and emigrant, un documented. Over 11 million low wage workers lost their job during the pendemic. The h earners actually gained over a million jobs. So far in the pendemic, 32 million people have tested positive for e covet in the us. Black and latinex people are roughly three times more likely to be hospitalized and twice as likely to die from coven 19 as white, non hespanic people.

For more than a century, public health researchers have demonstrated how poverty and discrimination drive disease and the coronavirus pandemic has only reinforced this.

In a Coronapod special, Nature reporter Amy Maxmen takes us with her through eight months of reporting in the San Joaquin valley, a part of rural California where COVID's unequal toll has proven deadly.
