The Ideal of the Hero

The ideal of the hero was one whose courage, wisdom, and self-sacrifice saved his country in time of peril. This glory in sacrificing one's life for the sake of country is described by Livy. If it looked as though the Romans were going to lose a battle, the Roman commander would offer his life to the gods of the underworld as part of a religious ritual of sacrifice. All Romans were expected to emulate these virtues as part of the moral code set by the Rolicianes.
