The idea of Adiaphora really comes into the Reformation because of the conflict that came up early on between Luther and Zwingli. In this period, there was growing literacy in urban areas with a real desire for a more word-focused religion rather than the kind of liturgical drama inherited from Catholicism. So Zwingli is going to have a really stripped-down liturgy, a focus particularly on preaching. This is going to affect his theology of the Eucharist because his focus is on preaching.
