In 1980, the band were on tour in Australia and New Zealand. Robert says he thought he'd have to kill himself to make a convincing record. The death by suicide of Ian Curtis does really loom over Robert's whole career. This is a very classic cure pattern that will continue through the entire history of Lowell being in the band of the cure. Mattie was becoming more and more unreasonable. He was getting very grumpy, very tired and moaning that he couldn't get any vegetarian food. Lots of little things upset him. It all just started to go wrong.
