The Importance of Bar Modeling in Visualizing Problems
When it's embedded over years, bar modeling could be a really effective tool. But when you're in year six and the children have never seen it before or try to tackle a year six level problem - they don't like using it. So I learned the hard way that sometimes you basically just added another cognitive load. If you're introducing the red and the blue boxes really late in the game, it might not be in your best interest.
