The Evolution of the Violin

The shape of the sound holes, F-shaped in Strads and all modern violins, didn't start out like that. The earliest ancestors to the violin were fiddles which had a circular hole. As you continue on through time they started to have a C-shaped hole. Then over time in the beginning of the violin period, the mid 1500s turned into the F hole - even more slender. This led to important issues in terms of sound power.
