The History of Yuan Shikai

Yuan Shikai arranged the abdication of the old dynasty. He thought that they would rally behind him as emperor but he went ahead with his plan anyway. Most of China knew nothing of democracy, only a small minority I think had any idea what a republic meant. A lot of Yuan's enemies seem to fall to assassination at just the right time for Yuan Shikai.
