Is There a Distal Dimension to Hearing?

Hearing is a distal sense, that it allows us to relate not in terms of a present object, but in terms of what Sarah is going to call traces. And by the time our listeners hear our voices, you and I could have died because there is a gap of time between those students. So there is that spectral dimension where we hear something, but we don't really know if the object that originally produced that is still there or not.
