The Excess Return of the Stock Market
I think inflation is one of those things no one thinks about until it's really big. And so even though you and I would like to adjust for real, I'm not sure clients ever look at it that way. If the markets up 30 and clients are up 20, they don't seem to care. It's a big nominal number. Like it doesn't matter. They underperform by 10%. But if they're down 5%, they're very upset when their 401k runs super hot. So your average investor in their 401k thinks about how that translates into investment returns.
