The Ustereishism of the Habsburg Empire
Many local groups in the empire, especially within this new realm of Hungary, were upset by being disenfranchised. A sort of liberal pluralism did arise to some degree among the intelligentsia in Vienna. But it was generally excluded except with one toehold that stands out as a temporary brief exception. The Archduke Rudolf held liberal views and wrote books celebrating the diversity of Austria-Hungary. Now for many reasons, both personal and ideological, he was increasingly ostracized by the imperial court and even his own family. And in 1889 he died at the hunting lodge of Myerling, aged only 31.
