A nuclear reactor works by harnessing the heat energy released from a sustained nuclear fission chain reaction. The core of the reactor contains fuel rods made of low enriched uranium. Water serves two main purposes: to slow down the neutrons flying around between the fuel rods, and to absorb the heat energy being released by the reactors.
