When Richard was four years old, his mom took him on a 50-mile bike ride across the south coast. He says he expected some kind of adulation when he returned home but she told him to 'run along' His takeaway from this is my parents wanted us to be strong and rely on ourselves. Being idle was frowned on; finding ways to make money was also encouraged.
